According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 4,700 Canadians were diagnosed with oral cancer in 2017 alone. This fatal condition has a greater mortality rate than both breast and prostate cancer. The good news, however, is that oral cancer can be successfully treated if caught early on.
Our team at Eglinton Square Dental Centre is key to early detection. Oral cancer screening is a routine exam that is quick, easy and painless. During this assessment, we’ll provide a thorough examination of the oral cavity. This region consists of the teeth and gums. But is also includes the lips, tongue, roof of the mouth and behind the wisdom teeth. Most oral cancers are located in these areas. Although the cells of the mouth are resistant to damage, repeated abuse from smoking, alcohol or even friction can cause painful sores where cancers can begin
If you notice any of the following symptoms, book an appointment with Eglinton Square Dental Centre right away:
Oral cancer screening does not require any special preparations. Our screenings are typically performed during routine dental exams.
During a screening, your dentist will look inside the mouth for small patches or sores. Using gloved hands, we will also feel the tissues in your mouth to check for lumps or other abnormalities. If you wear dentures, you’ll be asked to remove them so the dentist can inspect your gums.
Should we discover any signs of oral cancer or precancerous lesions, we’ll book a follow-up exam in the next few weeks. During this follow-up, we’ll check if the abnormality is still present and whether it has changed over time.
A biopsy procedure may also be recommended. This procedure involves removing a cell sample for laboratory testing to determine if cancer is present. The biopsy may be performed at our dental clinic, or the patient may be referred to an outside specialist.
As mentioned earlier, oral cancer can be treated successfully if detected early on. Be sure to visit us regularly for dental exams, so our team can identify the warning signs. Good oral health is crucial in maintaining your general wellbeing. So rely on Eglinton Square Dental Centre to provide you with the care your mouth deserves.
